Question by danny: What should I expect during a free consultation with a lawyer?
I scheduled an appointment for a free consultation with a lawyer because I need legal advice for this situation I’m in. I definitely don’t have the money to hire an attorney but would appreciate the advice of one. Am I free to tell him everything and not be pressured into hiring him?

If you’re fortunate, he will let you tell him everything about the case and give you some kind of specific advice on how to proceed. He is ethically and legally required to keep anything you tell him confidential (attorney-client privilege). But, he is under no obligation to provide any specific kind of advice. And, usually a free consultation will result in an attorney telling you what your general course of action should be.

Also, realize that you cannot quote the attorney in any respect when going through your case unless you retain him.

It’s not going to be a free-advice-a-thon. You will spend a total of around thirty minutes with the attorney. A good one will ask you questions about what happened. If you’re guilty, you shouldn’t tell him. Not because he can tell anyone else, but he can’t represent to the court that you’re innocent if you admitted to being guilty. Just answer his questions, and he will tell you if he can help you or not. Any ethical attorney will not pressure you into hiring him. But I wouldn’t expect a whole lot of good free advice from the situation. Good luck.
