Question by flashing before my eyes: What is a good law school known for its legal scholarship and commitment to service rather than by its name?
I want to carefully apply to some schools that have some of the above qualities mentioned. If possible, could you narrow the selection down to California

The best I know of is North Eastern University, but that is in Boston. No grades, very strong commitment to public service. It is not like a traditional law school but it is ABA approved. How it works is you do a semester of class work, then an internship for the other half of the year, this continues through all 3 years and gives you 3 good job experiences.
