I’ve been asked to be a character witness, which I am absolutely fine with- but I’d like to know what is legal and standard of the cross exam?

Primarily, you will be asked questions and your opinions regarding the person’s character. Such as their honesty, morality, reputation, etc. How long have you known the person, is he a good friend, do you know him personally or professionally, does he have a family or children, how does he interact with friends and family, etc. Basically, what sort of, “person,” you know then to be. The same types of questions will be asked by the defense attorney and the prosecution. For more details, check this link.
