Jonathan pass on classified information to Israel that was not declassified for such transfers. Being the position where he was back then at the time. The only thing he could do was pass it on to his supervisors. So he did commit a crime. Refusing to see this is illogical even in biblical terms. So in other words God is not punishing America. That would also interfere with the Free Will God gave us. God can only sit and watch us make our own lives as we see fit. If god takes back control and mandates, do this or this will happened. Then everyone would live in fear and how could someone love another in fear. That love would never be genuine love. Free will love is genuine love.

It is possible. But on such issues, everyone is God’s creation, and should be dealt with with some kind of mercy and leniency. In other words, it is cruel and inhumane to refuse to free anyone after so many year in prison.
