How do I explain about the United States debt in a classroom debate?

Question by hey: How do I explain about the United States debt in a classroom debate?
So my school is having a debate against maintaining a national DNA database. I estimated that it would cost us 4 billion dollars a year to maintain this database. The other student argued “a national DNA database is good in preventing crime, and plus our government has a debt of 14 trillion dollars. We can just add 4 billion dollars to the debt, that’s nothing.”

And then I was speechless… I didn’t know how to argue against that, even though I knew it was very wrong.

Thank you!

First off, they are just looking a Pros not the Cons. And 4 billion dollars is a lot of money. But its spending money like that that adds to the debt we already have.

And would you really want the Government having your DNA? Not every crime leaves DNA evidence. So how much crime would this help prevent? And is it worth 4 billion vs doing it the old fashion way

“my opponent says 4 billion is nothing…NOTHING? 4 billion? 4 billion here, FOUR BILLION THERE, and before you know it, we are in the trillions! THAT’S WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS COUNTRY AND WHY WE ARE IN DEBT AND OVER EXTENDED! somewhere friends, we have to draw the line on spending, and this is as good a place as any to start.

lookie here friends, i would not oppose a less expensive national data base of DNA records. perhaps it would be better to start with convicted sex offenders and felons convicted of violent crimes, but why keep the DNA of a DWI guy or a pot head? it makes no sense, does it? AGREED?

in conclusion, in these times of economic turmoil, all i ask for is a common sense approach to real problems. is that fair enough? thank you…..i rest my case.”
