Besides Legal Aid, does anyone know of an attorney who specializes in custody matters and will work pro bono?
Question by Christian93: Besides Legal Aid, does anyone know of an attorney who specializes in custody matters and will work pro bono?
My husband and I tried Legal Aid to get custody of his kids and we were even set up with an attorney for custody. But, she would never call us back and when the court date came, she never showed nor called us. We don’t have $ 3,000 readily available for an attorney. My family is greedy and his does not have that kind of funds and the ones that do are greedy also. We need an attorney who will work pro bono. Any suggestions?

Contact the state bar association and ask there. You may also consider trying at a law school, it might have a clinic.

No luck for you. The attorney I work for sometimes lets them make payments, but those are far and few, because more often than not, they do not finish paying when all is said and done. Who has custody of the children? You can always go to her office and sit, demand to sit there until she sees you. Pro-Bono is rare if any in the Family Law field. Some clients do not realize how long, and costly these cases can be. Lets say he is trying to take the kids from their mother, Does not matter if he can provide more, or better. He has to prove her unfit and unsafe within the meaning of the law. Harder than one might think.
There is nothing more difficult & time consuming for attorneys than custody cases. They are a bottomless pit of time. Lawyers have to pay their bills & support their families too. If they spend their time working for nothing, they can’t.
These are your kids; if they are important enough to you, you’ll raise the money however you have to. You can’t expect lawyers to sacrifice their families for yours.
Try finding someone with little experience, someone just out of law school.
Hang out on some of the internet email lists… there are THOUSANDS of custody battles going on out there, as well as people who are losing their rights, because they don’t have money.
This is not a hostile comment to you, at all… it is getting to the point of cynically saying .. “stand in line”.
Actually, I would love to see someone setting up low cost clinics, that focus only on custody battles.
